Our passion for indigo started out as a deep love for denim that turned into a wish to understand the core of denim, the indigo color. Nowadays we host indigo dyeing workshops regularly and we love to take the opportunity to do a little dyeing ourselves during them!
This scarf is made using a stamp that is dipped in melted beeswax, a basic way of creating a resist dyed pattern. There are many different resist dyeing techniques but all of them are based on the same idea; to block the dye from coloring parts of the fabric when it is dipped in a dye bath. After the dyeing is done the blocking matter is removed, and a white area is revealed! In the case of bees wax, the fabric is submerged into boiling water which helps to remove the wax.
For some time we have experimented with som different techniques to see which one we like the best and the beeswax printing is definitely a favorite. As you can see, the wax has some cracks that allowed the indigo to seep through in some places which we think of as a nice detail that makes each symbol unique and tells the tale of the process behind this hand made scarf.
This item is dyed in natural indigo that we buy from a farm in India. There are approximately 800 species of plants that contains indigo and the one used here is called Indigofera Tinctoria, and it also happens to be the species with the highest concentration of pigment output!

Apart from this scarf we also produce T-shirts made in Sweden, hand made leather bags in Tärnsjö, Sweden and jeans that we make in the workshop in the back of our store. In other words, Blue Highway is our project where we strive to move production as close as possible to our location in a world where most products are made in countries far away from the consumers.
