Paul McCartney’s 1961 Hofner 500/1 Cavern Bass. Paul McCartney played two left-handed Hofner 500/1 basses during most of his career with The Beatles and this 1961 model became known as ‘The Cavern bass’. Needing to replace the Hofner 333 which he had borrowed from Stu Sutcliffe, Paul had looked around for a new bass and found just what he needed in Hamburg. Purchased for £30, Paul used this 1961 model in live performances and studio recordings for With The Beatles, becoming his main instrument for two years until Hofner presented him with their new 1963 model. After being refinished in polyester sunburst in 1964 Paul used this early model as a backup on the 1964 tours and again in 1968 without the pickguard for the Revolution video. It is last seen during the filming of Let It Be and was stolen soon after. The illustration of this famous guitar is original and has been produced by George Morgan following extensive research.
